Asus Router Settings (ASUSWRT)

Asus routers often use 192.168.50.1 or 192.168.1.1. Default login is usually admin / admin. Newer models may ask you to set a password on first login.

How to Access Asus Router

1. Connect to the Asus WiFi or with Ethernet.
2. Open a browser and go to http://192.168.50.1 or http://192.168.1.1.
3. Log in with the default or your set credentials.
4. Change the admin password in Administration if you haven’t already.

WiFi Settings

In ASUSWRT: Wireless → General. Set SSID and encryption (WPA2-Personal). Under Wireless Security set the WiFi password. Apply and reconnect devices.

DNS on Asus

WAN or Internet → Internet Connection. Enable "Connect to DNS Server automatically" to No, then enter DNS (e.g. 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). See DNS Settings.

Firmware Update

Administration → Firmware Update. Check for updates in the interface or download the correct file from the Asus support site for your exact model (asus.com/support). Upload the file and wait for the upgrade to finish; do not power off. After reboot, log in again with your admin password.

Port Forwarding and Guest Network

In ASUSWRT, port forwarding is under WAN → Virtual Server / Port Forwarding. Add a rule with external and internal port, internal IP and protocol. For a guest network, go to Wireless → Professional or Guest Network and enable a second SSID with its own password; guest networks are typically isolated from your main LAN.

Default Asus (ASUSWRT) Login Credentials

Factory login is typically admin / admin; first-run wizard may require a new password immediately. Details: Router Passwords – Asus.

Common Asus Router Models

RT-AX58U, RT-AX86U, RT-AC68U, and ZenWiFi mesh systems run ASUSWRT with a familiar dark theme. Some models default to 192.168.50.1 to avoid conflicts with modems on 192.168.1.1. AiMesh nodes inherit settings from the primary router.

How to Find Your Asus Router IP

ipconfig

1. Connect to Asus WiFi or Ethernet.
2. Run ipconfig and note Default Gateway (192.168.50.1 or 192.168.1.1).

Router label

Sticker lists IP, SSID, and sometimes login hint. In ASUSWRT, Network Map also shows router IP under Internet status.

Change WiFi SSID and Password in ASUSWRT

Wireless → General for SSID; Wireless → Wireless Security for WPA2/WPA3 passphrase. Apply per band if dual-band entries are separate. Verify with homespeedtest.com.

Change the Administrator Password

Administration → System → Change Password (or set during initial setup). Use a strong password distinct from WiFi. See How to Protect Your WiFi Network.

DNS on Asus (detailed)

WAN → Internet Connection → set “Connect to DNS Server automatically” to No, enter DNS addresses from DNS Settings, Apply. Optional: LAN → DHCP Server can push DNS to clients.

DHCP and Network Map Clients

Network Map shows online clients; LAN → DHCP Server → Manually assigned IP reserves addresses for port forwarding. Block devices via Wireless → MAC Filter or AiProtection—see How to Blacklist a WiFi User.

Parental Controls and Guest Network

Guest Network under Wireless creates isolated SSIDs. AiProtection / Parental controls (model-dependent) schedule access and filter categories. Features vary between stock ASUSWRT and Merlin builds.

Firmware Update Cautions

Use Asus support downloads matched to hardware revision. Stay on power; wired upgrade is safest. Do not flash Merlin unless your model is supported and you accept warranty/third-party firmware risks. Never power off during the progress bar.

Factory Reset (summary)

Press reset while powered ~5–10 seconds (see manual—Asus often uses shorter hold than other brands). Defaults restore; run setup wizard. Instructions: How to Reset Your Router (Asus section).
